The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has led Nigeria’s naval delegation to the 2026 Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX) in Qatar, as part of efforts to modernise the country’s maritime security architecture.

The event, held between January 19 and 22, was organised under the patronage of Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and hosted by the Qatar Armed Forces.

DIMDEX is recognised as the largest maritime defence exhibition in the Middle East, showcasing innovations in naval platforms, weapons systems, and security technologies.

Nigerian Navy officials said the participation was aimed at strengthening the service’s platform holdings and enhancing operational capabilities through exposure to cutting-edge technologies.

During the conference, visiting warships from partner nations were berthed at Hamad Port, allowing for professional interactions and exchange of operational experiences.
Vice Admiral Abbas met with major defence solution providers to discuss the acquisition of modern platforms and technology transfer for indigenous ship production.

The Navy has built five seagoing vessels locally since 2010, including MV Sauka Lafia, NNS Andoni, NNS Karaduwa, MV Tug Commander Ugwu, and NNS Oji.
According to naval sources, these achievements form the foundation for expanding Nigeria’s domestic shipbuilding capacity.

The CNS also explored options for precision-guided munitions and advanced weapons systems suitable for maritime security operations in Nigerian waters.
Officials said this aligns with the Navy’s long-term vision of building a modern and professional force capable of securing Nigeria’s vast maritime domain.
Speaking on the development, Director of Information, Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, said the engagement would further position the Navy for regional leadership.

“The objective is to develop a modern, agile and professional naval force dedicated to securing Nigeria’s maritime interests,” he said.
He added that the Navy would continue to leverage international platforms to enhance national security.
