The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to troop welfare and national security with plans to expand operational formations across the country while intensifying support for wounded soldiers and families of fallen personnel.
This was disclosed by the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, during the opening ceremony of the COAS First Bi-Annual Conference 2026 held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites, Abuja.
In a solemn moment that highlighted the Army’s commitment to its personnel, Lieutenant General Shaibu presented Nigerian Army Personnel Insurance Cheques to families of fallen soldiers and troops wounded in action.
The Army Chief described the conference as an important platform for reviewing ongoing military operations, consolidating gains recorded in the first half of 2026 and developing operational strategies for the months ahead.
According to him, the conference would focus on operational readiness, emerging threats and measures aimed at improving effectiveness across operational theatres nationwide.
Shaibu commended officers and soldiers for their courage, professionalism and sacrifices in confronting insurgency, banditry and other security challenges threatening the country.

He paid tribute to fallen heroes, noting that their sacrifices remained critical to Nigeria’s peace, unity and stability.
“Their courage and sacrifice continue to inspire the nation and strengthen our resolve to defend Nigeria,” he said.
Reiterating his “Soldier First Concept,” the COAS stressed that troop welfare, training, morale and empowerment remained fundamental to sustaining military effectiveness.
He urged commanders to maintain close engagement with troops to sustain morale and combat readiness.
The Army Chief further disclosed that the Nigerian Army was currently expanding its operational footprint nationwide through the establishment of new formations, increased recruitment and improved infrastructure.
He added that healthcare services for personnel were also being upgraded alongside enhanced welfare packages and improved medical evacuation arrangements for wounded troops.
Shaibu stressed the importance of civil-military cooperation, noting that public support remained crucial to the success of military operations.
He also appreciated Bola Ahmed Tinubu for sustained support to the Army, particularly in the acquisition of modern military hardware and enhancement of operational capability.
Earlier, the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Bamidele Alabi, said the conference would consolidate operational gains and strengthen the Army’s response to emerging security threats.

He praised troops for their sacrifices and dedication in ongoing counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations across the country.
