Delta CP, Army brigade commander seek closer security ties ahead of elections

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, has called for stronger collaboration between the police and the Nigerian Army ahead of the forthcoming elections, stressing the need for sustained communication, intelligence sharing and mutual support among security agencies.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement on Monday following a courtesy visit by the Commander, 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 1, South-South, Operation Delta Safe, Brigadier General Ibrahim Buhari, and other senior military officers to the Delta State Police Command Headquarters in Asaba.
According to Edafe, the visit provided an opportunity for the two security agencies to strengthen their existing relationship and discuss areas of cooperation in tackling security challenges in the state.
Edafe said Brig. Gen. Buhari congratulated CP Erale on his assumption of duty as Commissioner of Police in Delta and assured him of the 63 Brigade’s cooperation.
He said the Brigade Commander noted that the police and military had worked together on several security concerns in the state, stressing the need to sustain the relationship by keeping communication channels open, sharing relevant intelligence and supporting one another whenever necessary.
Responding, Edafe said CP Erale welcomed the Brigade Commander and his entourage and thanked him for the visit, noting that the nature of policing in Delta State made collaboration with the military and other security agencies imperative.
According to him, the Commissioner likened the police and military to a tree with different branches, explaining that although the two agencies have distinct responsibilities, they are ultimately working towards the same objective.
Edafe quoted Erale as stressing that “the important thing is for both agencies to always remain on the same page,” particularly when dealing with security challenges requiring coordinated responses.
The Commissioner, Edafe said, also drew attention to the approaching election period, which he noted would require greater cooperation between the two agencies.
He therefore called for continued communication, intelligence sharing and mutual support, while assuring the Brigade Commander that the Delta State Police Command was prepared to work closely with the 63 Brigade to tackle crime and ensure that the state remained peaceful before, during and after the elections.
