The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, has convened a strategic meeting with security agencies, traffic managers and road contractors to address persistent traffic congestion along the Asaba-Onitsha Expressway ahead of the festive season.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, at the Delta State Police Headquarters in Asaba, focused on improving traffic flow and reducing the difficulties faced by motorists, particularly around the Niger Bridge corridor, where ongoing road construction has contributed to congestion.
Erale expressed concern over the disruption to vehicular movement and called for coordinated efforts among relevant agencies and construction firms to ensure smoother traffic operations along the busy route.
The police commissioner stressed the need for strategic deployment of traffic personnel, prompt removal of broken-down vehicles and effective collaboration among agencies responsible for traffic management and road safety.

He also urged contractors handling the ongoing construction to install adequate warning signs, clearly mark diversion routes and provide safe passage through construction zones.
According to the command, the contractors were further advised to work closely with traffic management agencies to minimise disruptions and ensure the safety of motorists throughout the construction period.
The meeting was attended by the Delta State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Commandant Chinedu Fabian Igbo; the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Corps Commander Charles E. Edem; a representative of the Director-General of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority; and representatives of the construction contractors.

The command said the engagement was part of efforts to strengthen inter-agency cooperation and address traffic challenges along the expressway as vehicular movement increases ahead of the festive season.
Erale reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting road users, supporting effective traffic management and improving the flow of vehicles along the Asaba-Onitsha Expressway during the construction period.
