Delta Police Launches Operation Velvet, Warns Against Vehicle Documentation Violations

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel Etaifo Erale, has led the flag-off of Operation VELVET in Asaba, with the command commencing a statewide enforcement exercise targeting vehicles with documentation and number plate violations.
The exercise, which commenced on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, followed a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and is aimed at strengthening compliance with vehicle and traffic regulations, improving road safety and enhancing security across Delta State.
Speaking during the flag-off in Asaba, CP Erale said the operation would target vehicles without valid documents, unregistered vehicles and vehicles without number plates, as well as those bearing defaced, obscured, altered or deliberately covered number plates.
The Commissioner of Police also disclosed that 10 vehicles were contravened for traffic violations in the metropolis and taken to the mobile court in Asaba, where they are currently undergoing judicial processes.
According to him, the exercise commenced simultaneously across the command’s nine Area Commands and police divisions in the state as part of efforts to ensure compliance with traffic and vehicle regulations.
CP Erale urged motorists and vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles are properly documented and that approved number plates are clearly displayed.
He also directed officers deployed for the operation to remain firm, civil and professional in the discharge of their duties, warning that extortion, harassment or any form of misconduct would not be tolerated.
The Commissioner solicited the cooperation of motorists and members of the public, assuring them that the enforcement would be conducted professionally and lawfully, with due regard for the rights and dignity of citizens.
He said the command remained committed to ensuring proper identification of vehicles, denying criminal elements the use of improperly identified vehicles and strengthening the safety and security of roads across Delta State.
The command said the statewide operation would be carried out in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police and within the bounds of the law.
