The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, has called on journalists to remain committed to truth and professionalism, describing responsible reporting as a key pillar for national unity and security.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s stability relies not only on military operations but also on how information is managed and shared.

Speaking through a representative at an Easter retreat organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Oluyede reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ dedication to protecting the nation despite ongoing security challenges.
He expressed optimism that the country will overcome its current difficulties.
Drawing from the Easter message, he noted that themes of resurrection, hope, and renewal are reminders that national challenges are temporary.

“Nigeria continues to face complex security threats, but we remain resilient. Our experience shows that difficult times do not last, and renewal is always possible when unity and faith endure,” he said.
The defence chief reiterated the military’s commitment to tackling terrorism, insurgency, and banditry, noting that the sacrifices of personnel have helped restore peace in several affected areas.

He also highlighted the crucial role of the media in national security, urging journalists to prioritize accuracy and avoid reports that could fuel fear or division.
“In today’s world, security is not only fought on the battlefield but also in the information space. Responsible journalism strengthens unity and builds public trust,” he added.

Oluyede further encouraged citizens to support security agencies through cooperation and timely information, while honoring fallen soldiers and calling for continued prayers for troops in active operations.
In his remarks, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, stressed the importance of ethical journalism in fostering accountability, transparency, and democratic governance. He noted that credible reporting helps combat corruption and strengthens national institutions.
“A nation is built not only on infrastructure but also on trust, accountability, and an informed population. Ethical journalism plays a vital role in exposing wrongdoing and holding leaders accountable,” he said.
He added that responsible media practice promotes unity, counters misinformation, and gives a voice to vulnerable groups within society.
Earlier, NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, urged journalists to embrace the spirit of Easter by renewing their dedication to truth, integrity, and professional excellence.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by media practitioners, including tight deadlines, occupational risks, and public expectations, but encouraged them to remain steadfast.

“Working in the Federal Capital Territory comes with a unique responsibility. We are at the heart of national conversations. Our reports shape opinions, influence decisions, and strengthen democracy,” he said.
He also called for greater unity within the union, describing it as essential for safeguarding press freedom and advancing the profession.
“As a union, we must remain united. Our strength lies in our collective resolve to overcome challenges,” he stated.
The Easter retreat, themed “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life,” brought together journalists, security officials, and other stakeholders to reflect on faith, responsibility, and the media’s role in national development.
It was colourful as Chapels, Pristine and Richy Rich rendered songs and drama to commemorate the risen Christ. Death indeed could not hold him captive.
