An officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has been arrested after allegedly firing shots into the air during a confrontation with traders at Kubwa Market in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has said.
The suspect, identified as Onoja Samuel, a Deputy Superintendent of Corps with the NSCDC, was arrested on October 25 after police received a distress call reporting that a man armed with a pistol was shooting sporadically at the market.
According to a statement issued on October 28, 2026, by SP Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Police Command, Abuja, the distress call came in at about 1:50 p.m., prompting operatives attached to Kubwa Police Division to move to the scene, where they disarmed and arrested the suspect.
Preliminary investigations indicated that Onoja had gone to the market with a pistol following reports that some traders had assaulted his wife.
The police said an argument subsequently broke out between the suspect and the traders, during which he allegedly fired several shots into the air.
A CZ pistol and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition were recovered during the arrest, the command said.

The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi PhD. FCAI., urged personnel of sister security agencies to exercise restraint and properly coordinate their operations within the territory.

He advised operatives planning authorised operations to notify the nearest police division responsible for the area to ensure effective coordination and prevent avoidable clashes.
The commissioner’s warning comes amid the need for security agencies operating within the FCT to maintain communication and cooperation while carrying out their duties.
