Chairman of United Bank for Africa, Tony Elumelu, has firmly dismissed circulating claims that his marriage has ended, describing the reports as false, malicious, and damaging.
The clarification was issued in an official statement by the bank’s spokesperson, Alero Ladipo, who said the allegation of a divorce involving the prominent businessman was entirely fabricated and intended to mislead the public.
According to the statement, the matter has already attracted the attention of law enforcement authorities, with three individuals reportedly arrested in connection with the creation and spread of the false narrative. Investigations, it added, are ongoing to identify and apprehend other contributors to the publication.
The bank warned that the circulation of such claims amounts to defamation and urged all platforms and individuals involved to immediately retract the content.
UBA stressed that those responsible must not only remove the material from circulation but also preserve all related records, including digital communications and metadata, pending further legal proceedings.
The institution further
cautioned that failure to comply would attract legal consequences, including possible civil and criminal action.
Reaffirming its position, the bank stated that it remains committed to protecting the reputation and integrity of its chairman and will pursue all lawful measures to ensure those behind the falsehood are held accountable.
