Residents of Liama Community in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State were thrown into excitement and relief as the Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO commissioned a newly constructed Jetty Waiting Room on Friday, May 29, 2026, as part of activities marking the 70th Anniversary of the Nigerian Navy.
The project, aimed at enhancing the welfare of residents and travelers within the riverine community, is expected to provide comfort, convenience and shelter for commuters awaiting boats at the jetty, particularly during harsh weather conditions.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Commanding Officer of FOB FORMOSO, Captain SK Haruna, stated that the absence of a befitting waiting area for passengers informed the decision of the Base to embark on the project in response to the needs of the people.
He noted that the Nigerian Navy remains committed not only to safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain but also to improving the living conditions of host communities through impactful and people-oriented interventions.

The event attracted a large turnout of officers, ratings, civilian staff, NYSC members, traditional leaders and members of the Liama Community, creating an atmosphere of appreciation, unity and celebration.
In his remarks, Chief Atuka Alangba, who spoke on behalf of the Liama Community, commended the Nigerian Navy for what he described as a timely and thoughtful intervention that would greatly benefit residents and travelers in the area.
He admitted that such meaningful gestures had not been experienced in the community for many years, expressing profound gratitude to FOB FORMOSO for remembering Liama Community and prioritising the welfare of its people.
Chief Alangba further pledged the continued support, cooperation and peaceful coexistence of the community with the Nigerian Navy in its efforts to ensure security and development within the area.
The commissioning ceremony further underscored the Nigerian Navy’s enduring commitment to strengthening civil-military relations and positively impacting communities within its area of operation.
The project also reflects the Service’s broader vision of fostering trust, goodwill and sustainable partnerships with host communities through strategic social interventions.
For residents of Liama Community, the newly commissioned facility stands not only as a shelter for travelers but also as a symbol of renewed hope, inclusion and the growing bond between the Nigerian Navy and the people.
As activities commemorating the Nigerian Navy’s 70th Anniversary continue across the country, the intervention by FOB FORMOSO has added another layer of significance to the celebration, demonstrating the Navy’s resolve to combine operational excellence with humanitarian service.
The event noted that the project would go a long way in easing the daily challenges faced by commuters in the riverine community while enhancing safety and comfort at the jetty.
