The Nigerian Army has debunked reports alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over salaries and allowances, describing the claims as false, misleading and deliberately sensational.
In a press statement signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, and dated 19 January 2026, the Army said the online publication, attributed to Sahara Reporters, was based on anonymous and unverifiable sources and was aimed at undermining public confidence and national security.
According to the Army, there has been no threat of mutiny within its ranks, stressing that mutiny is a grave offence under military law and completely alien to the ethos, discipline and professionalism of Nigerian Army personnel.
“The Nigerian Army remains loyal to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces,” the statement noted, adding that officers and soldiers are trained to channel grievances through established internal procedures rather than public platforms.
Clarifying issues around remuneration, the Army explained that promotion increments represent only one aspect of military pay and should not be misrepresented as total earnings.
It stated that military remuneration includes consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational allowances, field and hardship allowances, as well as other entitlements that vary depending on deployment, qualifications and responsibilities.
The statement further disclosed that the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government agencies, is implementing structured welfare reforms. These include periodic salary reviews, enhanced operational allowances, improved accommodation, medical care and insurance packages for troops and their families. Issues relating to allowances, it added, are continuously reviewed within approved government frameworks.
Anele also revealed that the Chief of Army Staff, since assuming office, has initiated constructive engagements with relevant authorities on troop welfare, with these efforts already yielding positive outcomes.
Contrary to claims of neglect, the Army said the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has consistently demonstrated commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces, particularly amid evolving security challenges.
Reaffirming its professionalism, the Nigerian Army described itself as a cohesive and disciplined force focused on its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting internal security operations.
It warned that attempts to portray the institution as unstable or lawless are irresponsible and detrimental to national security.
The Army urged members of the public to disregard unfounded reports and rely on official communication channels for accurate information concerning the Armed Forces.
