The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has partnered with technology firm Tomorrow.io to refine a Digital Climate Advisory Service aimed at improving decision-making among farmers.
The five-day co-design workshop, which began on February 12, 2026, seeks to develop a Decision Tree framework that will align NiMet’s 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction with specific crop and livestock activities.
Officials of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, and farmer development groups are participating in the exercise.
The proposed system is expected to generate automated, scenario-based advisories for farmers in cases of delayed rainfall onset, prolonged dry spells, or early seasonal rains.
The Director-General of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, said the initiative would simplify weather information for farmers.
“This climate advisory service is a game changer. It translates scientific weather data into simple, actionable guidance that farmers can use daily,” Anosike stated.
The CEO representative of Tomorrow.io, Brian Miranda, lauded NiMet’s leadership in adopting artificial intelligence tools in meteorology.
“NiMet is positioning itself as a leading National Hydrometeorological Service in Africa. AI-driven forecasting will significantly strengthen early warning systems for extreme weather events,” Miranda said.
NiMet noted that the Decision Tree would incorporate expert insights and farmer feedback to provide practical crop and livestock management guidance.
