The Nigeria Immigration Service has dismissed as false and misleading claims circulating in some quarters regarding alleged irregularities in its passport application and payment process, reaffirming that its official portal remains the only authorised channel for all transactions.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Service stressed that its passport application system is secure, transparent, and fully compliant with government regulations, noting that it operates exclusively through its designated online platform.
The statement, signed by Akinsola Akinlabi, Service Public Relations Officer, emphasised that at no time has the NIS authorised any religious organisation, private entity, or individual to act as an intermediary or payment channel on its behalf.
“The NIS operates a secure, transparent, and government-approved passport application system, which is accessible exclusively through its official portal. This remains the only authorised platform for all passport-related payments and processing activities for Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora,” the statement read.
The Service was reacting to recent allegations suggesting that the name of a religious organisation appears within its payment structure, describing such claims as entirely unfounded.
“Recent allegations suggesting that the name of a religious organisation appears in the Service’s payment process are entirely false and do not reflect the structure, integrity, or processes of the NIS,” Akinlabi stated.
According to the Service, a review of its authorised portal clearly demonstrates the transparency and authenticity of its processes, warning that any third-party platforms claiming to facilitate passport payments are fraudulent.
“Any third-party payment links or platforms purporting to process passport payments on behalf of the NIS are fraudulent and should be avoided at all costs,” the statement added.
The agency disclosed that it has commenced investigations into the origin of the claims, with preliminary findings indicating the involvement of individuals seeking to mislead the public or tarnish the reputation of the Service.
“The Service is currently investigating the matter to uncover the sources of this false claim. Appropriate action will be taken against any individuals or groups found culpable,” it said.
The NIS further reiterated that it strictly adheres to government financial regulations and works only with licensed and accredited payment service providers integrated within its official system.
It warned that any payments made outside its approved channels are done at the user’s risk, stressing that the Service would not be liable for any loss or inconvenience arising from such transactions.
“The public is strongly urged to exercise caution, access our services only via the official portal, and avoid any dealings with unauthorised agents or platforms,” the statement noted.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and public trust, the NIS assured Nigerians that it would continue to strengthen its systems and monitoring mechanisms to prevent fraud, misuse and misrepresentation.
The Service also encouraged members of the public to seek clarification through its verified communication channels, including its official social media handles and contact centres.
