The Nigeria Immigration Service has alerted Nigerians to the increasing cases of fraudulent migration schemes and irregular cross-border activities being perpetrated by criminal groups across the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Service Public Relations Officer, AS Akinlabi, the agency said vulnerable persons, especially young women and girls, were often targeted through fake promises of jobs, education and better opportunities abroad.
The service warned that many of such schemes end in human trafficking, forced labour and other forms of exploitation.
According to the statement, it is illegal to leave Nigeria without valid travel documents, including passports and visas, adding that genuine travel processes must pass through official immigration procedures and authorised border posts.
The agency also cautioned Nigerians against accepting unsolicited sponsorships, travel assistance or migration offers from unknown or unverified persons.
The service advised members of the public to verify all travel and recruitment opportunities through appropriate government channels and avoid dealing with agents promoting irregular migration.
It further urged Nigerians to report suspicious activities linked to human trafficking or illegal migration to the nearest immigration office or security agency.
The Nigeria Immigration Service also appealed to parents, guardians and community leaders to sensitise young people on the dangers of irregular migration and trafficking in persons.
The agency reiterated its commitment to securing Nigeria’s borders and protecting citizens from exploitation.
