As Nigeria ushers in a new wave of young graduates into national service, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has issued a firm warning against abscondment, declaring discipline, commitment and patriotism as non-negotiable pillars of the Scheme.
General Nafiu delivered the charge while addressing the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream One Corps Members at the NYSC Orientation Camps in Ogun and Oyo States, urging them to remain steadfast throughout the service year and channel their energies toward meaningful socio-economic development across the country.
In a statement signed by the NYSC Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the Director-General commended the Corps Members for answering the clarion call to serve, describing their participation as a clear demonstration of national loyalty and civic responsibility.
He cautioned them against any conduct capable of undermining the objectives of the Scheme, stressing that discipline and focus are essential to a successful service year.
Beyond compliance with NYSC regulations, General Nafiu advised the Corps Members to adopt prudent financial habits, noting that responsible resource management would not only ease their service experience but also position them for life after the programme.
He further urged them to respect the customs, values and traditions of their host communities, emphasizing that peaceful coexistence and cultural sensitivity are vital to effective service delivery.
“When you are posted to your place of primary assignment, respect their rules, be punctual, be resourceful and learn the culture of the organisation you are posted to,” the Director-General advised.
Providing updates on camp activities, the NYSC Ogun State Coordinator, Mrs. Olayinka Nasamu, disclosed that 3,341 Corps Members including 975 initially deployed to Lagos State were registered at the camp.
She noted that the Corps Members had conducted themselves responsibly and adapted well to the regimented camp environment, adding that camp officials were performing their duties with commendable synergy.
Similarly, the Oyo State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Kayode Ola-Peters, reported that 3,068 registered Corps Members had exhibited exemplary character, actively participated in camp activities and shown strong enthusiasm to contribute to national development across various sectors.
Reaffirming the Scheme’s commitment to youth development, General Nafiu assured the Corps Members of the continued support of NYSC management, stressing that the organisation remains resolute in grooming disciplined, responsible and patriotic young Nigerians capable of driving national progress.
