The Ogun State Police Command has debunked a viral video being circulated on social media as a recent security incident in the state, warning that the footage is an old recording from 2024 deliberately being shared with misleading captions capable of causing panic among residents.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, who described the recirculation of the video as a dangerous act capable of creating a false impression about the security situation in the state.
According to the command, investigations revealed that the footage being circulated online did not originate from any recent incident but relates to an event that occurred in 2024. It noted that presenting the video as a current occurrence was misleading and capable of generating unnecessary fear among members of the public.
The police expressed concern over the increasing trend of sharing unverified security-related content on social media, stressing that the spread of outdated and false information undermines the efforts of security agencies and could disrupt public confidence in ongoing security operations.

The command urged residents to exercise caution before sharing security-related materials online and to verify information through credible sources to avoid contributing to the spread of misinformation.
It further reassured residents that Ogun State remains safe, peaceful and secure, adding that officers and men of the command remain committed to protecting lives and property across the state.
The statement emphasized that security agencies are working tirelessly to maintain public order and urged citizens to continue their lawful activities without fear while supporting law enforcement efforts with timely and credible information.
To facilitate prompt response to emergencies, the command encouraged residents to make use of its official communication channels, including the Gateway Shield toll-free line, 0800 000 9111, and emergency numbers 0906 283 7609, 0912 014 1706, 0915 102 7369 and 0708 497 2994.
The police reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents and called on the public to remain vigilant against misinformation capable of threatening peace and security in the state.
