The Police Service Commission has raised concerns over data security and privacy in policing and public administration, as it commenced a four-day comprehensive data protection awareness programme for its officials in Abuja.
The training, which began on Monday at the Commission’s corporate headquarters, was formally flagged off by the PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (retd.).
Argungu, while declaring the programme open, stressed the critical importance of data security in modern policing and public administration, urging participants to take full advantage of the training to strengthen the Commission’s capacity for effective data protection.
He said the initiative would help ensure that the Commission’s handling of personal and sensitive information remained in line with Nigeria’s data protection requirements.
The programme is being organised by Charistech Consulting Ltd., a licensed Data Protection Compliance Organisation, in partnership with the PSC.
The Chief Executive Officer of Charistech Consulting Ltd., Philip Aiwekhoe, said the training was designed to equip PSC officials with knowledge of regulatory compliance, risk mitigation and secure data-handling practices.
Aiwekhoe said the curriculum was strictly aligned with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
The programme, scheduled to run from September 21 to 24, covers staff and members of the PSC Board, while prospective Data Protection Officers are scheduled to participate in a dedicated session on September 23.
The Commission said the training was specifically designed for personnel involved in handling sensitive operations and would promote a stronger culture of security and privacy awareness across the organisation.
Facilitators at the programme said the initiative would also help the Commission reduce the risks associated with data breaches and strengthen compliance with applicable data protection regulations.
Officials of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission were also present to observe the training.
