Two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have been critically injured following an attack by suspected armed drug traffickers in Ogun State.
The incident happened on January 22, 2026, at Akokoro area of Iwoye, Imeko-Afon Local Government Area, during an operation by the Ogun I Area Command.

In a statement issued by Command Public Relations Officer, Zakari Chado, the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni, said, “Our officers intercepted a 12-tyre truck suspected to be conveying illicit drugs when the suspects mobilised armed hoodlums and attacked them.”
He said reinforcement teams were prevented from reaching the scene.

“The attackers mounted heavy barricades at about nine strategic points to block access routes and frustrate reinforcement,” Afeni stated.
According to him, the assailants opened fire and damaged a patrol vehicle.
“They shot at our officers and disabled the patrol vehicle by shooting out its tyres,” he said.
Afeni confirmed that two officers were badly injured.

“Two of our personnel sustained gunshot injuries and are currently in critical condition, receiving intensive medical care,” he disclosed.
He added that the smugglers escaped with the seized truck.
“Using the barricades, the criminals fled the scene with the intercepted truck,” he noted.
The acting controller said investigation had commenced.
“We have commenced investigation to identify, track, and apprehend all those involved in this attack,” he said.
Condemning the incident, Afeni vowed that Customs would not relent.
“This barbaric act will not deter the Service from combating smuggling and protecting national security,” he stressed.
He also appealed to traditional rulers and community leaders.

“I urge community leaders to caution their subjects against smuggling and attacks on security personnel, as offenders will face the full weight of the law,” he warned.
