The Adewale Akodu Campaign Council (AACC) has suspended its campaign activities for two days in honour of Comrade Alfred Odifa, the immediate past Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, who is scheduled to be buried on Friday.
The suspension, covering Thursday and Friday, will allow members and supporters of the council to join colleagues in the journalism profession in mourning the late journalist. His wake service holds on Thursday ahead of his burial the following day.
Announcing the decision, the Director-General of the Adewale Akodu Campaign Council (AACC), Yunus Yusuf, said the suspension was a mark of respect for Odifa and an expression of solidarity with the NUJ family during its period of mourning.
Yusuf said the council considered it appropriate to set aside its campaign activities as colleagues, friends and loved ones prepare to pay their last respects to the deceased.
He urged members and supporters of the council to use the period to honour Odifa’s memory, support his bereaved family and remember them in their prayers.
The council also prayed that Almighty God would grant the family the strength and comfort to bear the loss and grant the late journalist eternal rest.
Reaffirming its bond with the journalism community, the AACC said its decision reflected the values of solidarity, compassion and unity that transcend political campaigns and elections.
It added that the loss was a reminder of the shared professional ties and common humanity that unite members of the journalism community, regardless of their individual pursuits.
The council concluded its message with a prayer for the peaceful repose of Comrade Alfred Odifa’s soul.
