AWKA – The Anambra State Police Command has arrested 26-year-old Anikpe Valentine Chibuike in connection with the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu, a 35-year-old single mother, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area.
The suspect was apprehended on January 7, 2026, by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, following an intensive investigation into the tragic incident.
Police authorities have officially dismissed earlier reports suggesting the victim was killed by creditors to whom the suspect allegedly owed money. The Command described those claims as unfounded and misleading.
During interrogation, Chibuike reportedly confessed to stabbing the victim in the neck with a knife around midnight on December 9, 2025. He stated that the act was fueled by suspicions of infidelity. The suspect further attributed his emotional distress to severe financial difficulties and mounting debts he had incurred while trying to establish a business for the deceased.
The investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly attempted to stage a kidnapping to evade justice. He admitted to planting a fake letter claiming he had been abducted by his creditors, a calculated move designed to mislead investigators and facilitate his escape from the scene of the crime.
Detectives have visited the mortuary where the remains of the deceased were deposited as part of the ongoing legal procedures. The Anambra State Police Command noted that this case has sparked significant public concern regarding the rise in domestic violence.
The Command urged the public to seek lawful and peaceful methods for resolving relationship disputes and to report early warning signs of domestic abuse to security agencies to prevent such avoidable loss of life.
The suspect is expected to be charged in court immediately upon the conclusion of the ongoing investigations.
