The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has directed commanders across the Nigerian Army to deepen operational effectiveness through strict accountability, professionalism and result-oriented leadership, as part of efforts to strengthen the Army’s combat readiness against evolving security threats.
Speaking at the close of the Chief of Army Staff Bi-Annual Conference 2026 held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites, Asokoro, Abuja, Lieutenant General Shaibu said the conference achieved its key objectives by providing a platform for critical assessment and strategic planning to tackle Nigeria’s complex security environment.

The Army Chief stated that deliberations at the conference focused on improving operational responses, strengthening training structures and adapting to emerging security realities. He noted that the resolutions reached were aimed at building a more agile, technologically advanced and mission-driven force.
Highlighting recent capability improvements, Lieutenant General Shaibu disclosed that the Nigerian Army had acquired additional tactical drones and reconfigured Army aviation assets for combat operations.

According to him, the upgrades have enhanced intelligence gathering, precision targeting, operational mobility and casualty evacuation.
He also stressed the importance of sustained recruitment, advanced training, professional military education and leadership development, maintaining that discipline, competence and meritocracy remain central to institutional integrity and operational efficiency.

Reaffirming his “soldier-first” philosophy, the COAS said troop welfare remains critical to mission success, directing commanders to prioritise prompt payment of entitlements, improved healthcare, educational support and better welfare systems for personnel and their families.
Lieutenant General Shaibu further urged participants to ensure that resolutions reached during the conference translate into measurable results in the field, insisting that implementation remains the true test of the conference outcomes.

The COAS expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support and strategic guidance to the Armed Forces, while also acknowledging the collaboration of the Minister of Defence, Minister of State for Defence, Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, and heads of security and intelligence agencies.
The event also featured the presentation of COAS commendation plaques to senior officers who completed their tours of duty, alongside the unveiling of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Feature Centre insignia.
