The Department of State Services (DSS) has released renowned consultant cardiac surgeon, Prof. Martin Aghaji, on bail following his arrest over alleged economic crimes currently under investigation.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State Branch, disclosed on Monday that Aghaji was arrested at his residence in Enugu on Thursday, July 2, by DSS operatives and subsequently flown to the Lagos State Command of the service.
According to the Chairman of the NMA Lagos State Branch, Dr. Babajide Kehinde Saheed, the Director of the DSS Lagos Command informed the association of the arrest and invited its leadership to the command in recognition of the existing relationship between both institutions.
Acting on behalf of the National Officers Committee led by NMA President, Prof. Afekhide Omoti, a delegation comprising the National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Olayinka Atilola, NMA Lagos Chairman, Dr. Babajide Saheed, the branch’s Publicity Secretary, Dr. Bisoye Akinsulire, and Dr. Placid Ajachukwu, representing the NMA Enugu State Branch, visited the DSS headquarters in Lagos on Sunday.
Saheed said Prof. Aghaji was subsequently granted bail and released into the custody of the NMA delegation.
”Prof. Martin Aghaji was released on bail yesterday to the NMA team on liberal terms without any pressure, perfected by the team,” the statement said.
The association, however, noted that details of the allegations against the medical expert remain confidential to protect ongoing investigations.
”The details of the alleged economic crime offence and other information remain classified to protect ongoing investigations,” Saheed added.
Neither the DSS nor the NMA disclosed the specific nature of the alleged economic crime under investigation.
