ABUJA – The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), has identified education as the essential cornerstone for Nigeria’s national development, unity, and long-term stability.
The Minister made these remarks on Wednesday at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja during a courtesy visit from the National Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN).
General Musa emphasized that sustainable national development is unattainable without a significant investment in quality education. He noted that such education must focus on building character, instilling discipline, and fostering responsible citizenship.
He further stressed that the responsibility for a child’s growth extends beyond the formal classroom, requiring a synchronized partnership between parents, teachers, and the wider community.
“Parents and teachers are the twin pillars of a child’s development,” the Minister stated. “Together, they shape the values, character, and future potential of our youth.”
The Defence Minister urged parents across the federation to take a more active role in the moral guidance and discipline of their children. He highlighted that a solid domestic upbringing is a fundamental prerequisite for producing citizens who contribute positively to the nation.
General Musa also acknowledged the vital role of the Parents Teachers Association as a key component of the School-Based Management Committee, praising its ongoing contributions to effective school governance.

During the visit, the National President of NAPTAN, Alhaji Haruna Danjuma, presented an Excellence Award to the Minister. Danjuma described the appointment of General Musa by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a timely and inspired decision.
The award recognizes the Minister’s visionary leadership and his successful efforts in reforming the Ministry of Defence and strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Richard Pheelangwah, concluded the session by thanking NAPTAN for its advocacy. He praised the association for supporting initiatives that encourage patriotism and civic responsibility among Nigerian youths.
