The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has advised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT Council, to reconsider and reschedule its planned protest slated for Tuesday, February 3, 2026, citing credible security intelligence and concerns over public safety.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, the Command confirmed awareness of the proposed peaceful protest and reaffirmed its respect for the constitutional rights of citizens to assemble and express grievances lawfully. However, it disclosed that intelligence reports indicate plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest for purposes capable of threatening public peace and order.
According to the Police, the appeal for rescheduling is a proactive measure aimed at preventing any breakdown of law and order, while safeguarding lives, property, and the rights of other residents to freedom of movement and the conduct of lawful daily activities within the nation’s capital.
“The request is made in the overriding interest of public safety,” the statement noted, emphasizing the Command’s responsibility to ensure that lawful protests do not become avenues for violence or insecurity.
The FCT Police Command assured residents of its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property across the territory.
It also urged citizens to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies to sustain security and stability.
