ABUJA – The Presidential Candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has accepted an invitation to chair the 2026 annual conference of the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers (GOMEP), scheduled to take place in Abuja on Thursday, November 26.
The conference, themed Securing Nigeria’s “2027 Elections: the Role of Online media Editors, Publishers in information integrity, public trust, and Democratic Resilience”, will be held at the Mariam Babangida National Centre for Women Development in Abuja.
The National President of GOMEP and chairperson of the conference planning committee, Rabi Abubakar, announced Adebayo’s acceptance in a statement issued on Friday by the guild’s publicity secretary, Eluwa Tochukwu.
Abubakar said Adebayo’s decision to chair the occasion was significant as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, with increasing attention on electoral credibility, public confidence in democratic institutions and the responsibilities of stakeholders in the electoral process.
She said the conference would examine the roles of electoral institutions, political parties and candidates, the media, civil society organisations and voters in promoting credible elections. Discussions are also expected to focus on public trust in the electoral process, access to reliable information, transparency and the conduct of institutions and groups whose actions could affect the integrity of elections.
Adebayo, a lawyer, political activist and media entrepreneur, was born on January 8, 1972. He is the presidential candidate of the SDP and founder of KAFTAN TV.
Over the years, he has participated in Nigeria’s democracy and governance debates, with particular interests in constitutional reform, human rights, electoral reform, public policy and the rule of law. According to Abubakar, the conference theme recognises that credible elections require more than the efforts of the electoral commission, stressing the importance of accountability and shared responsibility among all stakeholders.
She said the gathering would provide a platform for media practitioners and other participants to discuss ways of strengthening public confidence, promoting transparency and safeguarding democratic institutions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
GOMEP is a digital media membership organisation comprising 270 online publications across Nigeria. Its members include website owners, editors and publishers who operate digital publishing businesses across the country.
The guild promotes ethical online journalism, professional standards and the collective interests of its members. It also works to strengthen the credibility and sustainability of Nigeria’s digital publishing industry.
With an increasing number of Nigerians relying on online platforms for news and public information, GOMEP advocates responsible publishing and credible reporting while drawing attention to issues affecting the growth and sustainability of the digital media sector.
The conference is expected to provide a further opportunity for online publishers to examine the media’s responsibility to deliver accurate, fair and credible information as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
