The latest killing of villagers in Plateau State has sparked fresh outrage across the country, with the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria accusing the Federal Government of failing to protect citizens from recurring attacks by armed assailants.
In a statement issued on Saturday, by Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, National Coordinator of HURIWA, the rights group condemned the massacre of no fewer than 13 residents in Ngbra Zongo community, Kwall District of Bassa Local Government Area, describing the attack as barbaric and unacceptable.
According to HURIWA, several other residents sustained critical injuries after heavily armed attackers reportedly invaded the community and unleashed violence on defenceless civilians.
The association lamented that the latest incident reflects what it described as the continued abandonment of Plateau communities to criminal elements responsible for repeated bloodshed across the state.
HURIWA also criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing the Federal Government of showing inadequate urgency and weak political will in addressing the persistent killings in Plateau State.
The group further faulted Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, alleging that the state government has failed to implement effective measures to protect vulnerable communities from recurring attacks.
The organisation further described the recurring violence as a national emergency and a major indictment on Nigeria’s security architecture.
HURIWA expressed concern that despite repeated attacks in communities across Plateau State, including previous incidents in Barkin Ladi and Bassa areas, perpetrators continue to evade arrest and prosecution.
HURIWA stated that the repeated attacks have deepened public distrust in the government’s ability to safeguard lives and property, warning that continued inaction could embolden criminal elements further.
The association called for the immediate deployment of reinforced security personnel to vulnerable communities across Plateau State, especially Bassa and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas.
It also demanded an independent and transparent investigation into the recurring attacks, urging security agencies to ensure the arrest and prosecution of all those linked to the killings.
HURIWA further urged the Federal Government to move beyond routine condemnations after violent attacks and adopt concrete preventive measures to stop the continuous bloodshed in Plateau and other troubled parts of the country.
