The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening internal oversight and discipline within the Nigeria Police Force.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.
According to the statement, the restructuring is designed to refocus the unit on its core mandate, address operational inefficiencies and reposition it as a credible internal accountability mechanism within the Force.
The reorganisation, it said, will enhance proactive monitoring, intelligence-driven inspections and real-time oversight of police personnel and operations across commands, formations and departments.
It added that the new framework harmonises key investigative and monitoring functions in line with the Force’s reform agenda.
Consequently, the IGP approved the appointment of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar, as head of the Police Monitoring Team to oversee the operations of the restructured unit.
Before his appointment, Abubakar served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the State Criminal Investigation Department in both the FCT and Rivers State Police Commands.
During his tenure, he was said to have played critical roles in high-profile investigations and worked with state authorities to modernise investigative techniques and strengthen operational effectiveness.
The IGP noted that the reform is aimed at entrenching professionalism, discipline and transparency within the Force, stressing that the Monitoring Unit will play a central role in identifying operational lapses and enforcing standards.
The police reiterated its commitment to sustained reforms, institutional development and the delivery of a more accountable and citizen-focused policing system.
