The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has described the alleged impeachment threat against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as politically perverse and unconstitutional.
The group made this known in a statement issued on Thursday by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko.
HURIWA accused members of the Rivers State House of Assembly of abusing legislative powers for political vendetta.
Onwubiko alleged that the lawmakers were acting at the prompting of former governor Nyesom Wike, describing the situation as contradictory and suspicious.
“An impeachment driven by proxy interests cannot stand the test of constitutional legitimacy,” Onwubiko stated.
The association called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently intervene to prevent political breakdown in the state.
It warned that allowing such an impeachment would weaken democratic institutions nationwide.
HURIWA urged the APC leadership to issue immediate disciplinary directives to halt the process.
The group stressed that impeachment is not a political weapon but a constitutional safeguard requiring due process.
It also appealed to the Rivers State Chief Judge to resist any attempt to legitimise an unlawful impeachment.
HURIWA said Rivers State needs stability and cooperative governance, not manufactured crises.
