The Armed Forces of Nigeria have reiterated that January 15 is officially recognised as Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, correcting widespread public and media usage.
This clarification was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, and made available to journalists in Abuja.
Uba explained that the day is dedicated to honouring both serving military personnel and those who lost their lives defending Nigeria.
He said the Federal Government deliberately set aside the date to strike a balance between remembrance and celebration of service.
According to the statement, the annual observance is preceded by a week of military, civic, and ceremonial activities nationwide.
These activities, he said, culminate in a wreath-laying ceremony and parade on January 15.
Major General Uba recalled that the event was formerly known as Armed Forces Remembrance Day before the official change in designation.
“The revised name reflects the dual responsibility of honouring the living and remembering the fallen,” he said.
He urged media organisations to adopt the correct terminology in all future publications and broadcasts.
Uba also expressed appreciation to the press for its continued support of military operations and national security efforts.
