The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commissioned new accommodation and recreational facilities in Abuja as part of efforts to improve personnel welfare, boost morale and enhance operational effectiveness.
The projects, commissioned on Friday, by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, include Airmen’s Quarters at Mogadishu Cantonment and Abacha Road, 065 Medical Officer’s Quarters and the NAF Valley Base Sports Complex in Asokoro.
Speaking at the commissioning, Aneke described the development as “another significant milestone in the continuing efforts of the Nigerian Air Force towards enhancing personnel welfare and infrastructural development.”
He said the projects went beyond the provision of physical structures, describing them as evidence of the Service’s commitment to improving the living conditions, physical well-being and overall effectiveness of its personnel.
According to him, the demands of military service require personnel to remain focused, physically fit and mentally prepared, making adequate accommodation and recreational facilities critical to sustaining morale, cohesion and operational readiness.
Aneke said the accommodation projects would provide “a more conducive and secure living environment for our airmen,” while the sports complex would promote “physical fitness, recreation, teamwork and esprit de corps.”
The CAS also disclosed that the NAF was developing a sustainable formula to enable its personnel to own homes.
He said discussions were ongoing with banks and relevant government agencies to address factors responsible for the high cost of housing and limited access to affordable homeownership by personnel.
Aneke said the initiative demonstrated the Service’s commitment to the welfare of personnel and their families, both during active service and after retirement.
He further revealed that some blocks of the newly commissioned accommodation had been named after officers and airmen who paid the supreme price or distinguished themselves in the operational theatre.
The CAS said the gesture was aimed at preserving the memory of fallen personnel, honouring their sacrifices and gallantry, and inspiring future generations of NAF personnel.
He said the projects were also in line with a key component of his leadership vision of “maintaining a highly motivated force by enhancing welfare and infrastructural renewal.”
Aneke commended those who contributed to the successful completion of the projects and urged beneficiaries to ensure their “proper maintenance and judicious use.”
He assured that the NAF would continue, within available resources, to implement initiatives aimed at improving the living and working conditions of its personnel while strengthening its capacity to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
The commissioning underscores the Service’s commitment to building a well-supported, motivated and operationally effective force.
