Poland has described Nigeria as a critical stabilising force in the West African sub-region, acknowledging the pivotal role of the Nigerian Armed Forces particularly the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in counter-insurgency operations and regional security architecture.
The Polish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Michał Cygan, made this assertion during an official courtesy visit to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters in Abuja on January 13, 2026.

Ambassador Cygan commended the professionalism, resilience, and operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Armed Forces, noting that Nigeria’s sustained security engagements and strategic leadership continue to contribute significantly to peace and stability across the region.
He further expressed Poland’s readiness to explore practical avenues for enhanced bilateral defence cooperation, particularly in support of Nigeria’s evolving security priorities.

According to the Polish envoy, Nigeria’s geostrategic importance and experience in combating asymmetric threats place the country at the centre of regional security efforts, making partnership with Nigeria both strategic and mutually beneficial.
In his response, Air Marshal Aneke underscored the importance of strategic international partnerships in addressing contemporary and asymmetric security challenges. He reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to leveraging cooperation with friendly nations to enhance operational effectiveness, capacity building, intelligence sharing, and information exchange in support of national defence objectives.

The CAS also reiterated the Service’s openness to mutually beneficial partnerships aimed at strengthening counter-insurgency capabilities while contributing to regional and global security.
Discussions during the visit focused on deepening bilateral defence cooperation, with emphasis on collaborative areas that would support and project the Nigerian Air Force’s ongoing counter-insurgency operations across the country.

The engagement further highlighted the growing relevance of defence diplomacy in fostering mutual understanding, enhancing operational collaboration, and strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Poland.
It also reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s enduring commitment to professionalism, strategic partnerships, and sustained engagement in the pursuit of peace, stability, and security within Nigeria and the wider West African region.
