The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and with support from the European Union, has begun preparations for Nigeria’s next national border management policy cycle with a review of the country’s existing strategic framework.
The review was the focus of a three-day Top Management Workshop held from September 27 to 30, 2026, at Zuma Rock Resort, Niger State, where senior NIS officials and partners assessed the 2019–2023 National Border Management Strategy (NBMS) and its Action Plan.
The engagement was aimed at drawing lessons from the implementation of the previous strategy and identifying priorities for the 2027–2031 policy cycle, with emphasis on strengthening Nigeria’s border management system and responding to emerging security and migration challenges.
Speaking during the workshop, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, KN Nandap, said the next strategy must be built around reliable migration data, effective implementation mechanisms and sustained cooperation among relevant government agencies.
Nandap said the review should produce a practical and actionable framework capable of addressing emerging challenges while positioning Nigeria to provide leadership in integrated border management across Africa.
The workshop featured strategic discussions, technical sessions and group presentations, after which participants consolidated the outcomes of the review.
The process culminated in an NIS Executive Management Endorsement Session, during which key recommendations were reviewed and endorsed, priority interventions considered, financing options examined and the proposed strategic direction for the 2027–2031 policy cycle validated.
The Nigeria Immigration Service said the engagement further demonstrated its commitment, alongside its partners, to strengthening collaboration and improving border management through continuous review and adaptation of its policies and strategies.
The workshop was organised by the Nigeria Immigration Service in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration and with support from the European Union.
