NSCDC advocates security education, collective action to protect schools in Lagos

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, has called for greater security education, vigilance and collective responsibility among stakeholders to curb violent attacks on schools and ensure the safety of pupils, teachers and educational facilities across the state.
The call was made on Wednesday during the 7th edition of the NSCDC Lagos Public Relations Clinic, organised by the Command’s Public Relations Unit, with the theme: “Security and Safety of Schools in Lagos: The Roles of Government, NSCDC and Stakeholders.”
Representing the Lagos State Commandant, Mr. Adedotun Keshinro, Deputy Commandant of Corps (DCC) Jimoh Sulaiman said the NSCDC remained committed to protecting schools, schoolchildren, teachers, educational assets and host communities in line with its statutory mandate.
He stressed that security education had become a critical tool in preventing violent extremism, kidnapping, abduction and other threats targeting educational institutions.
Sulaiman urged governments, security agencies, school administrators, parents and communities to work together to eliminate attacks on schools through vigilance, professionalism and information sharing.
He said the safety of schools was a shared responsibility that required sustained collaboration among all stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, Professor Waziri Adisa of the Department of Sociology, University of Lagos, advocated a whole-of-society approach to school security, describing safe learning environments as essential for uninterrupted education, public confidence, social stability and national development.
Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of Safety Signatures Limited and Gulf Flower Schools, Dr. Cynthia Gregg, called for stronger inter-agency collaboration, continuous training and enhanced capacity building to improve school safety across Lagos.
While commending the NSCDC Lagos Command for its proactive efforts in protecting schools, she urged relevant authorities to sustain investments in security measures capable of safeguarding students and educational infrastructure.
The Lagos State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Akintoye Hassan, called for renewed commitment to school safety and praised the NSCDC for initiating the Public Relations Clinic, describing it as a platform for strengthening collaboration among security agencies, educators and other stakeholders.
He stressed the need for coordinated action to protect schoolchildren, teachers and host communities from security threats.
The event also featured a technical panel session moderated by veteran journalist Mr. Dipo Kehinde, with contributions from officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, the NSCDC Special Female Squad and other stakeholders, including a pupil who shared perspectives on school safety.
