The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned five suspects before the Ota Magistrate Court over the alleged assault on police officers and obstruction of their lawful duties in the Bells area of Iyana-Iyesi, Ota.
The suspects were arraigned following an incident on October 2, 2026, in which police officers were allegedly attacked while conveying a handcuffed suspect to the station after arresting him with a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
The officers were reportedly ambushed by a group of persons who allegedly attacked them with cutlasses, stones and bottles, leaving some personnel injured.
The attack also allegedly resulted in damage to the police operational vehicle and the escape of the suspect being conveyed to the station.
The Ogun State Police Command, following intelligence-led operations, arrested five persons identified as Morenikeji Badmus, 36; Adedoja Segun, 40; Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride, 49; Mike Stephen, 28; and David Odeh, 32.
The suspects were arraigned on charges bordering on conspiracy, serious assault on police officers, obstruction of lawful duty and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The command said efforts were ongoing to apprehend other suspects who allegedly participated in the attack.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, reiterated that the safety of police officers performing lawful duties remained a priority of the command.
Ojajuni urged members of the public to refrain from physical confrontation with law enforcement personnel, stressing that grievances should instead be channelled through established lawful means.
