The Police Service Commission (PSC), in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has commenced a three-day training programme for 100 personnel to strengthen human rights-based policing and effective oversight of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
The training, holding in Abuja from October 13 to 15, 2026, is aimed at equipping PSC personnel with the knowledge and skills required to promote accountability, professionalism and respect for human rights in police operations.
The Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd), mni, psc, NPM, reaffirmed the PSC’s commitment to combating human rights abuses and ensuring responsible policing in Nigeria.
Speaking at the commencement of the programme on Tuesday, Argungu commended the ICRC for its support and recognition of the Commission’s efforts to promote discipline and accountability within the police force.
He urged participants to cultivate the habit of reading and familiarising themselves with relevant laws, statutes and legal authorities to enhance their capacity to discharge their oversight responsibilities effectively.
The PSC chairman warned that the Commission would not tolerate human rights violations under his leadership, pledging to sustain efforts towards improving efficiency, discipline and professionalism in the Nigeria Police Force.
Earlier, the ICRC Police and Security Adviser, Mr. Chuks Ngbeken, described the training as significant to strengthening the capacity of PSC officials to monitor police conduct in line with international human rights standards.

He said the programme would expose participants to relevant legal frameworks and best practices for protecting human dignity during police operations, particularly in conflict and humanitarian situations.
Ngbeken added that the knowledge acquired would enable the Commission’s personnel to perform their oversight functions more effectively and promote compliance with established human rights principles.
The collaboration between the PSC and the ICRC underscores ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional oversight, improve police accountability and entrench respect for fundamental human rights in law enforcement.

The Commission is expected to leverage the training to enhance its monitoring of police conduct and support the development of a more professional, accountable and rights-conscious police force in Nigeria.
