Sanitary pads: Weekenders publisher urges NAFDAC to investigate harmful chemical claims

The Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Weekenders Magazine, Princess Joy Omagha Idam, has urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to urgently investigate claims that some sanitary pads may contain harmful chemicals.
Idam, in a statement, called on the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, to initiate independent laboratory testing of sanitary pads available in the Nigerian market to determine whether they contain substances capable of posing health risks to users.
She said the issue deserved urgent attention given the millions of women and girls who use sanitary products regularly.
According to her, Nigerians require clear scientific explanations from NAFDAC, the agency responsible for regulating the safety of products used and consumed by the public.
“This is not about creating fear or attacking manufacturers. It is about protecting Nigerian women and girls and giving the public accurate information. NAFDAC must verify these claims and tell Nigerians the truth,” Idam stated.
The publisher urged the agency to publish the findings of its investigation and take appropriate regulatory action against any product found to fall below established safety standards.
She also called on manufacturers and importers of sanitary products to cooperate fully with the investigation, stressing that consumer health and safety must take precedence over commercial interests.
Idam said women and families deserved confidence in the products they used every month, adding that a prompt and transparent investigation would help distinguish facts from rumours.
She maintained that making the findings public would enable consumers to access reliable information and make informed decisions regarding sanitary products.
