Tinubu Hails Nigerian Army’s Global Reputation, Pledges Stronger Support for Modernisation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the Nigerian Army as a formidable force and a critical pillar of the country’s security architecture, praising its record of professionalism and contributions to peace and stability within Nigeria, across Africa and in global peace support operations.
Represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima at the grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 in Port Harcourt on Monday, the President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Army through sustained investment in modern equipment, troop welfare and advanced military capabilities.
”The Nigerian Army has consistently demonstrated resilience, discipline and operational excellence. Its contributions have not only safeguarded Nigeria’s sovereignty but also reinforced peace and stability across Africa and beyond,” Tinubu said.
He noted that from its participation in global conflicts to leadership roles in regional interventions and United Nations peacekeeping missions, the Army has built a legacy of courage and professionalism that continues to earn international respect.
The President also commended the successful hosting of the African Land Forces Forum, describing it as a strategic platform for deepening military cooperation, promoting innovation and strengthening collective responses to emerging security threats across the continent.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s celebration, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” Tinubu said it reflects the enduring bond between the military and Nigerians.
He paid tribute to fallen soldiers, assuring that their sacrifices would never be forgotten and that the Federal Government would continue to support their families.
The President further applauded the Army’s growing emphasis on indigenous defence production, intelligence sharing and the adoption of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, to improve operational effectiveness.
In his address, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said the Nigerian Army’s mission goes beyond winning battles to sustaining peace, protecting national interests and securing the country’s future.
”Our responsibility extends beyond battlefield victories to sustaining peace, defending national interests and securing the future of the nation,” the Army Chief said.
Shaibu reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to an ambitious modernisation programme focused on upgrading operational capabilities, renewing military equipment, expanding infrastructure and deploying advanced platforms in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He stressed that tackling Nigeria’s complex security challenges requires “a whole-of-society approach,” anchored on collaboration among the military, government institutions, international partners and citizens.
Also speaking, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara commended the Nigerian Army for its role in maintaining peace and protecting critical national assets in Rivers State and the wider Niger Delta.
He pledged his administration’s continued support for the Army, noting that collaboration with the 6 Division has been instrumental in addressing security challenges and sustaining stability in the region.
The NADCEL 2026 grand finale featured a military parade, tactical displays, equipment exhibition and the presentation of the Chief of Army Staff’s Commendation Awards to outstanding personnel. The event also showcased the Army’s Research and Development Exhibition, highlighting advances in indigenous military technology and innovation.
Among dignitaries at the ceremony were former Heads of State, including Yakubu Gowon and Olusegun Obasanjo, Chiefs of Army Staff from 17 African countries, Liberia’s Special Adviser to the President, members of the National and State Assemblies, as well as former Chiefs of Defence Staff and former Chiefs of Army Staff.
