Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from office.
His resignation was contained in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir.
In his letter, Tuggar expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve.
“The Minister expressed his profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve the nation and to contribute to the implementation of the President’s 4D foreign policy strategy as a guiding framework for Nigeria’s foreign policy,” the statement said.
He also appreciated the management and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the diplomatic community for their support.
“Ambassador Tuggar also expressed his sincere appreciation to the management and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as members of the diplomatic community, for their cooperation and support throughout his tenure,” the statement added.
The statement noted that Tuggar’s tenure was marked by efforts to advance Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives, including people-centred diplomacy through humanitarian evacuations, scholarship facilitation and support for Nigerians abroad.
It added that his administration enhanced diaspora engagement through the development of a structured Nigerians-in-Diaspora database.
His tenure also witnessed strengthened bilateral and multilateral relations, particularly with traditional partners and countries in the Global South, as well as the promotion of regional security cooperation.
“He submitted his letter of resignation to the SGF’s office before the stipulated 31st of March date for political office holders to hand over their resignations as stipulated by the Electoral Act and instructed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement said.
The letter was received on behalf of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by Dr. Abubakar Kana.
