Chris Okobah, PhD, Crowned African Author of the Decade
Thursday, October 1, 2026, will remain an unforgettable date in the literary journey of Chris Okobah, PhD.
At the Abuja International Trade Fair Centre, in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, more than 200 African authors gathered for a remarkable celebration of African literature and intellectual excellence. The occasion brought together writers, literary enthusiasts and distinguished guests to recognise the Best Living African Author of the Decade.
Many outstanding books and accomplished authors were nominated. Remarkably, three books written by Chris Okobah were among the works selected for consideration—a distinction that, by itself, spoke powerfully about the breadth and consistency of his literary contribution.

Then came the defining moment.
As anticipation filled the hall and the final result was announced, Chris Okobah emerged as the overwhelming winner.
It was more than the announcement of an award. It was a declaration of exceptional literary excellence—a recognition of years spent transforming imagination, experience, pain, history, law, society and the African condition into the written word.
Before an audience that included serving and former governors, ministers, former ministers, their spouses and other distinguished personalities, a writer’s long journey received one of its most memorable affirmations.

For Chris Okobah, the honour represents far more than a trophy or title. It is a reminder that the lonely hours of writing, the sacrifices behind every manuscript and the courage to continue telling African stories can ultimately find their way into the hearts of readers.
On that October afternoon in Abuja, it was not merely one man who stood honoured.

The African story was honoured. The power of the written word was celebrated. And a lifetime devoted to writing received an extraordinary crown.
