ABUJA – The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) on Saturday hosted a commemorative Golf Kitty in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
The sporting event, held at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club within Yar’Adua Barracks, Asokoro, brought together senior military leaders, defense stakeholders, and golf enthusiasts in a symbolic display of remembrance and camaraderie.
The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), emphasized that the annual Remembrance Day serves to honor serving personnel, veterans, wounded warriors, and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. He noted that the commemoration is a vital reminder of the military’s role in defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and national unity.
General Musa highlighted that sporting engagements like the Golf Kitty are essential for promoting physical fitness, mental resilience, and esprit de corps among personnel. He also used the occasion to applaud President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing military welfare.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, lauded the troops for their continued dedication and professionalism across various operational theaters. He called on all Nigerians to sustain their support for the military, stressing that national security remains a collective responsibility.
Brigadier General Nicholas Ashinze, while providing details on the tournament, disclosed that over 100 golfers participated in the event. He described hosting the Remembrance Day Kitty as a significant honor for the club and a fitting tribute to the nation’s heroes.
The event concluded with the presentation of awards and souvenirs, celebrating the legacy of Nigeria’s military personnel through both sport and solemn reflection.
