The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, CP Ajao Saka Adewale, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a police corporal, F/No. 520061 CPL Blessing Omene, who was reportedly struck and killed by a truck while on duty along Glory Land Drive, East-West Road.
Omene, a member of the Safer Highway Patrol Unit, died on September 30, 2026, while carrying out her duty of protecting road users and maintaining safety along the highway.
In a condolence message, CP Adewale described the death as a painful loss to the Command, saying the officer had reported for duty in service to the public but did not return home.
“On behalf of the Bayelsa State Police Command, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family, colleagues and the entire Safer Highway Patrol Unit. We mourn an officer who only reported for duty in service to the public and did not return home,” he said.
The Commissioner said the incident had deeply affected the Command and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, urging officers to take every necessary precaution while carrying out their duties.
“As we remember Blessing, let it be in our minds that this is one sad event that pains the command to the marrow and disturbs the mind of the IGP and his management team,” Adewale said.
He urged officers, particularly those deployed on highways, to remain vigilant to approaching vehicles, maintain safe positions and strictly observe established road safety procedures during operations.
He also directed supervisors to reinforce safety precautions during operational briefings to minimise risks to personnel deployed on the highways.
The Commissioner commended the colleagues of the deceased officer for their efforts in ensuring the arrest of the suspect allegedly involved in the incident.
“I want to sincerely appreciate the efforts of the teammates who ensured the arrest of the suspect,” he said.
Adewale assured the bereaved family of the Command’s support at the difficult time and prayed that God Almighty would comfort the family and grant eternal rest to the deceased officer.
