The Bayelsa State Police Command and the National Union of Road Transport Workers have agreed to strengthen collaboration against criminals posing as commercial drivers and using motor parks to target unsuspecting passengers.
The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, CP Ajao Saka Adewale, raised the concern on Tuesday when he received the state leadership of the NURTW, led by its chairman, Comrade Dinyoerinyu Eminah, at the Command Headquarters in Yenagoa.
A statement by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Muhammed, said the police chief expressed concern over criminals who allegedly pose as commercial drivers, pick up unsuspecting passengers around motor parks and rob them of their valuables.
Ajao urged the union to strengthen coordination among its members, identify unauthorised operators and promptly share information with the police on suspicious persons and activities.
The NURTW delegation acknowledged the security concern and pledged to work with the Command to prevent the practice from taking root in the state.
The union also appreciated the Command’s support in maintaining law and order and committed to working with park officials and drivers to improve the safety of commuters.
Ajao assured the transport stakeholders that the Command would sustain engagement with the sector and act on credible information capable of preventing crime.
He also urged passengers to use recognised loading points and promptly report suspected criminal activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines, 07034578208 and 09167322691.
