The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has declared that the Nigeria Police Games remain a critical platform for strengthening fitness, professionalism and unity within the Force.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 15th Biennial Police Games (BIPOGA) in Asaba, Delta State, the police chief welcomed government officials, security leaders and athletes, noting that the sporting fiesta reflects national commitment to youth development and institutional excellence.

He acknowledged the presence of the representative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, saying their support underscored the importance of the event to national unity and service.
According to him, the Police Games go beyond tradition and form an essential part of modern policing standards.
“The Police Games occupy a special place in the life of the Nigeria Police Force. They are more than a tradition. They are a statement that policing is not only about enforcement, but about endurance, agility, teamwork, resilience, and the strength of character that sport uniquely develops,” he said.

The IGP explained that globally, athletic readiness is closely tied to operational readiness, stressing that a fit officer enhances public safety and professionalism.
“In every sprint and contest of skill, we see courage under pressure, respect for rules, integrity in competition and composure in challenge. These Games therefore are not apart from our mission — they are part of it,” he added.

He recalled the success of the previous edition hosted in Ibadan in 2024, noting that Asaba 2026 builds on that legacy with renewed ambition and stronger commitment to excellence across police commands nationwide.
Addressing the athletes, Egbetokun urged them to compete with honour and represent the Force as ambassadors of discipline and national stability.
“You carry not only the colours of your teams, but the pride of a profession committed to national stability. Compete with passion, but also with honour,” he said.
The police boss also commended the Delta State Government for hosting the event, describing the state as a model partner in promoting youth engagement, cohesion and institutional development through sports.
He said the games would strengthen bonds across ranks, regions and formations while reinforcing unity within the Force and the country.
“As we declare these Games open, we look forward not only to medals and records, but to the renewal of the Nigeria Police Force in strength, wellness, professionalism and camaraderie,” he said.

The IGP further appreciated former Inspectors-General, partners and guests for honouring the occasion, adding that their presence reflected the enduring legacy of the institution.
“May these Games be conducted in peace. May excellence define every contest and sportsmanship guide every athlete,” he concluded.
