flydubai Suspends Israel Flights as FZ1073 Cockpit Attack Investigation Continues
From Diaspora Dispatch World Desk
flydubai has suspended all flights to and from Israel while investigators probe Tuesday’s cockpit attack aboard flight FZ1073, in which a co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain and sent the Boeing 737 plunging roughly 14,125 feet in just 29 seconds before being overpowered by crew and passengers. “flydubai flights to and from Israel will be suspended while the investigation continues,” the airline said, adding that “the underlying reasons and motives behind this event are unknown and remain subject to a formal investigation.”
The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority is leading the inquiry alongside Saudi investigators, after the aircraft diverted to Tabuk. Both the captain and the co-pilot remain hospitalised. No timeline has been given for when flights to Israel might resume, with the airline saying the suspension will be reviewed as investigation details emerge.

Christa Pike Alive in Critical Condition as Tennessee Reviews Botched Execution
From Diaspora Dispatch World Desk
Christa Pike is still alive and in critical condition in hospital, her attorneys confirmed, a day after Tennessee’s attempt to execute her by lethal injection failed. “Christa is alive right now,” said her legal team, who described the botched procedure as “cruel, and it was torturous.” Witnesses reported she continued breathing audibly, even snoring — an hour after two doses of pentobarbital were administered.
Governor Bill Lee has ordered a third-party investigation and halted all scheduled executions in the state pending its outcome. Pike’s attorneys are now calling on the governor to commute her death sentence outright, arguing the state has shown it cannot carry out executions humanely. No date has been set for any further proceedings.

Egypt and Ethiopia Expel Diplomats as Horn of Africa Tensions Mount
From Diaspora Dispatch Africa Desk
Egypt declared an Ethiopian embassy counsellor persona non grata on 1 October, giving him 48 hours to leave in a reciprocal move after Ethiopia expelled an Egyptian diplomat. The expulsions follow accusations from Ethiopia’s military leadership that Egypt, Sudan and Eritrea are backing armed groups fighting the federal government amid renewed fighting in the country’s north claims Egypt has rejected. Ethiopia and Eritrea have since severed diplomatic relations entirely, with Addis Ababa shutting its embassy in Asmara. The African Union has urged restraint from all sides, as tensions over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam continue to simmer in the background.
Elsewhere on the continent, Kenya’s Gen Z-led voter registration drive has signed up 2.6 million new voters ahead of planned further gains, Algeria’s parliament has approved the death penalty for deliberate arson following a devastating wildfire season, and rights groups have documented widespread sexual violence against women in Sudan’s conflict zones.

Atiku, Obi Lead Fierce Pushback Against Tinubu’s Independence Day Address
From Diaspora Dispatch Nigeria Desk
Opposition figures have lined up to reject President Tinubu’s 1 October Independence Day speech, in which he declared the economy had “passed through our Red Sea.” Former Vice President and presidential candidate of ADC Atiku Abubakar dismissed it as “full of ‘we will’” promises, saying “Nigerians are hungry today. They pay transport fares today. They need jobs and safety today.” NDC’s Peter Obi pointed to more than 140 million Nigerians in poverty and 18 million children out of school despite 2023 promises.
Chieftain Dele Momodu offered a sharper rebuke, saying the president “was expected to stabilise it and not to metastasize it into stage four cancer,” while a PDP faction led by Tanimu Turaki said Nigerians were “travelling through a Red Sea of economic pain caused by insensitive and irresponsible leadership” — turning the president’s own metaphor against him. Religious bodies including CAN and the PFN called for tangible improvement in living standards. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga hit back, suggesting critics “did not read” the speech in full.

Thousands Join Soft Nigeria’s 5km ‘Run and Rave’ in Warri for Independence and 2027 Buzz
From Diaspora Dispatch Nigeria Desk
Thousands of youths took to the streets of Warri and Effurun on 2 October for a 5km “Run and Rave” organised by Soft Nigeria, blending fitness and entertainment with Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary celebrations. The route ran from the PTI Flyover in Effurun through Effurun Roundabout, Jakpa Junction and Airport Junction, ending at Delta Career, with organisers including Collins Oghenerouna and Sylvester Oghenetega working alongside the Executive Assistant to the Delta State Governor.
Some runners in colourful sportswear carried placards backing President Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, with many voicing supports for both leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections, while a large number of them rejected the event claiming it was a political rally in support of Tinubu. It was a mixed feeling of events as few were chanting Ibi and burnt their T-shirts. “The massive turnout showed the growing interest of youths in political and developmental issues,” said Dr Maurice Ojo-Ede, one of the event’s observers.
