Tigray Rebels Quit Mekelle as TPLF Joins Six Armed Groups Against Abiy
Tigray rebel forces have temporarily left Mekelle as fighting with federal troops intensifies, with the TPLF now aligned with six other armed groups opposing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government, a development threatening the 2022 peace agreement. TPLF leaders have vowed guerrilla-style operations to “strike the enemy wherever we choose.”

Five days after gunmen seized 20 prospective NYSC corps members from two buses on the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway, accounts of what has happened since then conflict. Security agencies say ten were rescued, but victims’ families say those who got out fled into the bush themselves. Kidnappers have reportedly cut their demand from ₦50 million to ₦5 million per victim (about ₦100 million in all), with captives beaten and allowed short calls home to press families.
Police have said the camp is mined with IEDs, delaying a ground assault, and families say they have been told to “keep buying time.” Seven victims have been named by their parents, and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology has confirmed three of its graduates are among those taken. Our earlier report that all 20 remained held reflected the information then available; the rescue figures are still unverified.

Public Servants End Warning Strike, Threaten ‘Total Strike’ Next
The JNPSNC’s three-day warning strike ended with about 65% compliance nationwide, with full compliance in Akwa Ibom, Oyo, Osun, Kaduna, Sokoto and Gombe. Unions warned the next action “will be a total strike” with wider labour solidarity within weeks unless government cuts fuel prices, reviews public servants’ pay and allowances, and sets up a tripartite committee on the 2027 minimum wage. No government response had been recorded.
