The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the brutal killing of three personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) by suspected terrorists and bandits in Kebbi State, describing the attack as a chilling reflection of Nigeria’s deepening security crisis and a direct challenge to state authority.
The advocacy group also commended security agencies for rescuing the younger sister of a former Minister of Power and her twin sons from kidnappers, while urging authorities to intensify efforts to secure the immediate release of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, HURIWA expressed outrage over the killing of Deputy Chief Road Marshal Assistant Umar Aliyu, Senior Road Marshal Assistant Ezra Manu Gona, and Road Marshal Assistant I Mansur Ibrahim Nasir along the Tsamiya-Illo Road in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
According to the group, the slain officers were carrying out their lawful duties when they were ambushed and murdered by armed criminals.
HURIWA described the attack as a cowardly assault on public servants dedicated to safeguarding lives and property, noting that the incident underscores the growing threat posed by terrorists, bandits, and other violent criminal groups across the country.
The organisation extended its condolences to the families of the victims, the leadership of the FRSC, and the government and people of Kebbi State.
Calling for decisive action, HURIWA urged the military, police, intelligence services and other security agencies to launch coordinated operations aimed at tracking down, arresting and prosecuting those responsible for the killings.
“Nigerians can no longer continue to live under the constant threat of terrorist attacks, kidnappings and violent criminality,” the group stated.
HURIWA, however, praised security agencies for the successful rescue of the younger sister of a former Minister of Power and her twin sons, describing the operation as evidence that intelligence-driven and coordinated security strategies can produce positive results.
While welcoming the rescue, the group stressed that many victims remain in captivity across the country, particularly the schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State.
It called on relevant security authorities to deploy all available resources to ensure their immediate and safe release, warning that prolonged captivity could expose the victims to severe physical, psychological and emotional trauma.
The group further urged the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all security institutions to demonstrate unwavering commitment to defeating terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other violent non-state actors threatening national stability.
HURIWA maintained that Nigeria must not surrender any part of its territory or any segment of its population to criminal elements, insisting that the time for decisive, intelligence-led and sustained action against insecurity is now.
