In a move to strengthen accountability and public trust, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has appointed SP Awu Fidelis Jonah as the substantive Head of the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the Nigeria Police Force.
The appointment, according to Force Headquarters, is part of efforts to boost responsiveness, accountability and public confidence in the Force’s complaint-management process.
SP Awu is a seasoned officer with vast experience in public complaints management, supervision, criminal investigation and international peacekeeping.
He is a pioneer member of the CRU, where he rose through the ranks to become Second-in-Command before his elevation.
His experience within the Unit spans complaint handling, call-centre operations, supervision, citizen engagement and institutional accountability.
Academically, SP Awu holds a Higher National Diploma from Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa; a Postgraduate Diploma in Crime Management and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice System from Kaduna State University; and a Master’s Degree in Security and Strategic Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
He is also a graduate of Advanced Detective Course 67 at the Police Staff College, Jos, and has undergone relevant human rights and professional policing training.
From 2022 to 2023, he served as Deputy Contingent Commander, Formed Police Unit Contingent 11, Mogadishu, Somalia.
The IGP charged the new CRU boss to sustain professionalism, ensure prompt response to public complaints, respect for human rights and transparent handling of complaints against police personnel in line with established procedures.
The Force says it remains committed to strengthening internal accountability and promoting professional, rights-respecting and people-centred policing.
