The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for stronger collaboration between the Nigerian Army and the Rivers State Government to enhance national security, protect critical infrastructure and promote economic development.
The Army Chief made the call on Friday during a courtesy visit to Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalaye Fubara, at the Government House, Port Harcourt, as part of activities marking the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL 2026).
Speaking during the visit, Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, quoted the COAS as saying he was in Rivers State for the week-long Army Day celebration, which will climax with the grand finale on July 6.
Lieutenant General Shaibu expressed appreciation to the Rivers State Government and its people for their hospitality and support, noting that the conducive environment provided by the state had contributed to the successful hosting of the annual event.
He also commended the state government for its continued support to the Nigerian Army, stressing that closer collaboration among the military, government and citizens remains vital to tackling emerging security challenges and safeguarding strategic national assets.
Responding, Governor Fubara thanked the Nigerian Army for choosing Rivers State to host this year’s Army Day celebration.
The governor also commended Lieutenant General Shaibu for what he described as the improvement in the state’s security situation since he assumed office as Chief of Army Staff.
According to the governor, the improved security environment has boosted crude oil production and contributed to economic growth in the state.
Fubara further praised the Nigerian Army for its sustained operations against insurgency, pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Rivers State Government to supporting the Nigerian Army in its efforts to protect critical national infrastructure, strengthen internal security and promote Nigeria’s economic stability.
The Nigerian Army Day Celebration is an annual event commemorating the contributions and sacrifices of officers and soldiers in defending the country’s territorial integrity and supporting internal security operations. This year’s grand finale is scheduled to hold on July 6 in Port Harcourt.
