The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya, has expressed deep sorrow following the passing of Mr. Yakubu Mohammed, the celebrated journalist and co-founder of the legendary Newswatch magazine.
In a statement released on behalf of the National Executive Council and the broader NUJ community, Comrade Yahya described the late Mohammed as a courageous visionary. He noted that Mohammed’s integrity and commitment to investigative excellence were instrumental in shaping the landscape of modern Nigerian journalism.
“Yakubu Mohammed was more than just a journalist; he was an institution,” the NUJ President remarked. “As a co-founder of Newswatch, he held a historic role in establishing editorial independence and rigorous reporting standards during some of the most pivotal chapters in Nigeria’s history.”
The Union highlighted that Mohammed’s influence reached far beyond the newsroom. As a respected intellectual and mentor, he guided generations of journalists who continue to be inspired by his dedication to ethical practice and professional courage.
The NUJ extended its heartfelt condolences to the Mohammed family, the former staff of Newswatch magazine, and the entire Nigerian media industry for this significant loss.
The statement concluded with a prayer for the eternal rest of his soul and for his family and loved ones to find the strength to bear the loss of such a towering figure.
