The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial candidate for Delta Central in the 2027 general election, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has alleged that armed political operatives loyal to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori attacked a party campaign meeting in Uvwie and threatened to kill him.
Omo-Agege made the allegation in a statement following an incident which he said occurred at about 5:30am on Friday at the venue of an NDC campaign meeting in Uvwie, Delta Central.
According to him, more than 50 armed men allegedly led by Emmanuel Erube, whom he identified as the Disciplinary Committee Chairman of Jakpa, stormed the venue and destroyed campaign materials and canopies.
“This morning at 5:30am, over 50 armed men led by Mr. Emmanuel Erube — the Disciplinary Committee Chairman of Jakpa — stormed the venue of our NDC campaign meeting in Uvwie, Delta Central,” Omo-Agege alleged.
“They tore down canopies and destroyed every campaign material we had set up. This wasn’t random. It was planned.”
The former Deputy Senate President further alleged that Erube and the men accompanying him threatened to kill him and the NDC Uvwie Campaign Coordinator, Olorogun Dr. Esere Ejifoma Atumu, should they attend the campaign event in Uvwie.
“In the middle of it, Erube and his men made it clear what they came to do. They vowed to kill me and my Uvwie Campaign Coordinator, Olorogun Dr. Esere Ejifoma Atumu, if I show up in Uvwie for the event,” he said.
Omo-Agege subsequently accused Governor Oborevwori of being responsible for the alleged threat, saying he was taking the matter seriously because of what he described as previous threats allegedly made against him.
“I hold Governor Sheriff Oborevwori directly responsible and culpable for this,” he said.
“My basis is unambiguous. The Governor has told several people, in private, that he will have me killed and nothing will happen because he is the Chief Security Officer of Delta State.”
The NDC candidate alleged that the incident represented an attempt to intimidate the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections, describing it as “an act of state terrorism” and “an attack on democracy and on the people of Delta State.”
“What happened today, carried out by his known political foot soldiers, is proof of a deliberate state-backed intimidation of opposition in Delta State,” he alleged.
“When you use named political operatives to carry out violence, the fingerprints lead straight back to Government House, Asaba.”
Omo-Agege, however, did not provide independent evidence in the statement to substantiate his allegations against the governor or establish that the alleged attackers acted on the governor’s orders.
He called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to arrest and investigate Erube and those he described as his gang.
“The Inspector General of Police and the DG of DSS must arrest Mr. Emmanuel Erube and his gang now. Investigate who is bankrolling them in Government House and prosecute them,” he demanded.
He also called on the Delta State Commissioner of Police to provide round-the-clock armed protection for him, Atumu, NDC campaign teams and supporters across the state.
Omo-Agege further appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), United States Embassy, European Union, African Union and civil society organisations to monitor developments in Delta State ahead of the 2027 elections.
“INEC, the US Embassy, EU, AU, and all civil society groups must take note of this escalation and send observers and human rights monitors to Delta State before someone gets killed,” he said.
He urged residents of Uvwie and other parts of Delta State not to be intimidated by the alleged incident, insisting that the NDC would continue its political activities.
“To the people of Uvwie and Delta State: Do not be afraid. Do not back down. We will not be silenced. We will not be intimidated. The fight for a New Delta continues,” Omo-Agege said.
“The world is watching. And history will remember who spilled human blood in the name of politics in Delta State.”
