The Anambra State Police Command has ordered a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding a shooting incident at Onitsha Head Bridge, following a confrontation during an attempted arrest that left victims with gunshot injuries.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, gave the directive on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, while addressing a crowd in Onitsha over the incident.
CP Nnanna, who subsequently visited the victims at the hospital, said the immediate priority of the Command was to ensure that those injured recovered fully.

He assured the victims of the Command’s support and pledged to personally ensure that their medical expenses were covered.
According to the Commissioner, the investigation will focus particularly on the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the firearm, with a view to establishing the facts and determining appropriate action based on the findings.
He explained that the incident occurred when suspects allegedly resisted arrest, resulting in gunshot injuries.

CP Nnanna appealed for calm and urged members of the public to remain peaceful while allowing the investigation to run its course.
He reiterated the commitment of the Anambra State Police Command to professionalism, accountability, respect for human life and adherence to the rule of law.

Meanwhile, normalcy has returned to the Head Bridge area, as traffic and human movement have been de-escalated and free flow of vehicular and pedestrian movement restored.
The development followed heightened activity around the area after the incident, with the police assuring residents that efforts were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
